Is it a pool leak or Evaporation

It's that time of the year when the air is cooler than the pool water. Early in the morning when you see all that fog over the lakes that is because the air is cooler and the water tempature is warmer providing evaporation. Despite popular belief, there can be as much, if not more evaporation in the Winter than in the Summer.

Since you live in Florida you know that in the summer there are afternoon showers, it is not uncommon to have several hours of rain, creating high humidity. This high humidity drastically slows down evaporation in your pool. Our winter season is dry and windy then the rest of the year creating the perfect environment for evaporation in your pool.  Also, when the air gets cooler, you turn your pool heater on. With the air cooler, as I stated before, your are now heating up your pool which will cause more evaporation than normal.  If you think you are losing water in your pool, try turning your heater off for a week and see how much water you lose.  You should notice a pretty big difference in evaporation.  If you have water features such as waterfalls and spillover spas, these features put more of the  water in the air, leading to additional evaporation.  Turn the fountain and waterfall off and check the level in a day or two.  The more your pool is exposed to the sun and wind the more evaporation you'll see. A screened in pool will evaporate less than an unscreened pool. A pool that is not on a lake, golf course or other large piece of land will evaporate less than a pool that is.  If you think you are losing more water than normal, you can stop by any Pinch A Penny Store, Pool Hut Stores, The Pool Pleaser Stores (Lake Nona, Pinecastle, and The Marketplace), Aqua Pool Supply&Service;(Kissimmee), Budget Pool Supply in Deltona and DeBary, Brittany Pools(Davenport), Crystal Clear Pools of Florida, two stores in Clermont, Westridge Plaza Pool Supplies in Davenport and The Pool Shop in Kissimmee to pick one of free pool leak test buckets.  If your local pool supply store does not have any of our pool leak test buckets, please have them call us and we will deliver a supply to them free of charge.  This will tell you exactly how to do the bucket test and let you know just how much water you are losing.
If you do the bucket test and you lose more water in the pool than in the bucket, then you probably have a leak in the pool.  If you have a basic pool with no additional water features, you should not lose more than 1/8" of water per day.  If you lose more in the bucket than the pool loses, check to see if your dog has water in his dish.
